Hi Rabbi. Can you please clarify the halacha about listening to a Woman singing on a recording? I once learned that it would be mutar if I didn’t know what the woman looked like but if I did then no. Then someone said that it is mutar even if I know what she looks like. Kind of confused. Thank you.


Only live singing is an issue, and even then only under more personal circumstances.
A woman singing on a recording is not a halachic problem. The issue of “Kol Isha” applies to hearing a woman singing live in front of you.
In addition, the concern is only when it is someone you know personally and she is singing alone, not when several voices are singing together as part of a group or choir… or at a Shabbat table.
So ordinary recorded music is completely fine, even if you know what the singer looks like.
