Hi Rabbi,

I have a question about the real meaning and consequences of Reshut, Chova, Lechatchila and Bedievad.

I understand that, for example, a Minhag cannot be an obligation, there is no such a thing as an obligatory Minhag and as I understood from the article of Borei Nefashot, the same can be said about a Reshut. But many Rabbinical authorities seems to make Judaism so perfect that you cannot skip anything and everything is equal in status, some kind of a perfectionist neurosis, which can be too much for a Baal Teshuva like me.

Now we have the concepts of Lechatchila and Bedievad. Long time a go a Rabbi told me that he doesn’t use Lechatchila and Bedievad but prefer Permitted or Not Permitted, because by using the fomer terms you create more conflict for many people that are in the process of growing. It is really imporper to act Bedievad? How can a permitted act be forbidden from the beginning? Which seems to be the idea of Bedievad. It may not be the ideal, but you are not doing and Averah.
