My uncle doesn’t keep kosher, but wants to barbecue for me on his nonkosher outdoor grill. What would he have to do to make it acceptable to cook kosher meat? Thanks!

A barbecue grill is actually one of the simplest things to kasher. Growing up in the ultra-Orthodox world, we often went on trips with camps and schools. When we arrived at a park, we would commonly use the public grills after a very quick and straightforward kashering process.
Here is the basic method: first, clean the grill the same way anyone normally would before using it — scrape off any leftover pieces or residue with a brush. Then turn the grill on high heat for about five minutes before placing the kosher food on it. Anything remaining after that point is burned and charred.
Beyond the technical halachah, it is also important to remember the value of family relationships and respect. It is a beautiful thing to eat at your uncle’s house and maintain those connections. When I went to yeshiva in Israel, my father prepared us how to respectfully eat in the homes of our aunts and uncles, all of whom were not observant. That was the attitude he taught us — to know the halachah, act properly, and still preserve family warmth and respect.
Thank you so much!!
