where does halacha draw the line between mental pain and physical pain? the gemara says mitztaer patur min hasukkah, someone in pain is exempt from sukkah, so does real depression or anxiety count as tza’ar? 1. pikuach nefesh: if someone is in a real mental health crisis, does that push off shabbos or fasting on yom kippur the same way physical danger does? and who decides, the person, the family, a doctor? 2. mitzvah obligations: is someone struggling with depression exempt from davening or other mitzvos the way a choleh is, and how would anyone even know where the line is between struggling and exempt? 3. my shoteh question was about legal status, this one is different, here i am asking about pain itself and what it excuses. so what is the bottom line, does halacha take mental pain as seriously as physical pain or not really?
