For Ashkenazim who avoid kitniyot, if oats are not from the five grains and there is no clear tradition that oats were ever included in the original minhag of kitniyot, should oats really be treated as kitniyot at all?

The 2026 list has, e.g., Cheerios marked for Sephardim only. So these are okay for all? Thanks!
Yes. Good point. Next year we will incorporate this into the list.

No. Oats are not Kitniyot. They should be treated like corn or quinoa. The Minhag of Kitniyot is not relevant to the way we buy food today, and would not have been established today. There is no Mesorah that says that oats is kitniyot and we should not be adding to a Minhag that isn’t really necessary today.
