It is actually pretty simple, in my view.
The commandment is telling us the following:
Don’t create an insane extremist culture where everyone is deadly afraid of and or hates god.
Show your children and students an environment where they can love their god.
God cannot be a mean, obnoxious concept, and at the same time ask you to love him. That would be absolutely insane.
