Here’s a typical Italian menu. The biggest issues at Italian restaurants are confirming that everything that you will eat is vegetarian, especially the renet in the cheese. You can ask the waiter and if he’s not 100% sure, have him ask the chef. Be aware that many people mistakenly think that cheese with animal renet is still vegetarian, so be specific.
Once you confirm it’s all vegetarian, you can have pizzas, pastas, caprese salad (my favorite), and many antipastas and desserts.
I will go through this menu that I downloaded to give you an item by item review. The goal is to learn it, so you do it on your own.

italian restaurants are the best for eating out. One of the big helps is the fact that there’s hardly a bishul Akum (cooking of non-Jew) issue. Avoid rice and cooked or mashed potatoes. Pastas, pizzas, breads, are all Pat Paltar which is allowed. Cakes, cookies, and desserts are usually fine. Ask. Italians are proud of their olive oil and almost never use animal fat.
enjoy.

  1. How about grilled fish. Any special considerations for the grill that they may be using to grill meats and such?

And for pastas, we just tell them to use a fresh clean pot? Or for fried fish, use a fresh pot with new oil?

    1. The grill is constantly running and therefore constantly kashering itself. Anyone who cooks on a grill knows what I’m talking about. Ask them to make sure the grill is clean anyway.

Pasta is normally made plain and then additives are mixed in afterwards. A pot of pasta will have no meat or squid flavor.
      Fried fish, correct.

  2. If they commit to them being vegetarian, then they have separate oils. You should certainly ask if you aren’t sure. My experience is that they were asked these questions multiple times. If they say something is vegetarian, they’re very careful not to mix. Otherwise they say “it’s vegetarian, but it’s cooked together with non-vegetarian…”.

  3. And what about those fritters, do they use the same oil they used for the calamari?
    Thanks so much!

  4. Dear Rabbi Abadi,
You may have covered this, but keylim and ovens in, say, an Italian restaurant. Pepperoni being cooked in the same oven as my vegetarian pizza? Thank you in advance for any guidance!

      1. Also, can the same pizza logic be extended to, for example, Pizza Hut?

I found a site called Vegetarian Resource Group (VRG.org). They seem to be pretty serious about animal products and rennetless cheese – and are pretty machmir about it! I found this posting about the cheese at Pizza Hut:
