Subject:  ARE WIGS PERMISSABLE
Message:  HEY RABBI,
I'VE LOOKED UP DIFFERENT RESPONSES THAT YOU GAVE IN REGAURD TO WIGS AND I'M NOT UNDERSTANDING WHETHER OR NOT IT IS ALLOWED FOR WOMEN TO COVER THEIR HAIR WITH A SHAITEL? IVE HEARD SOME POSKIM SAY THAT THEY NEED A DOUBLE COVERING, ONLY HATS, ONLY SNUDS...BUT IM CONFUSED WHAT EXACTLY THE HALACHA IS,AND FURTHER MORE WHAT IS THE MINIMUM REQUIREMENT?
THANKS SO MUCH FOR YOUR HELP -CHAG SAMEYACH!

Reply:  Wigs are a valid covering for women's hair.

The exact amount of covering depends on the city you live in and the way of the women there. For example in Bnei Berak you need a full 100% covering, but in Manhattan you can have some hair out on the sides around the temples.   It is hard to give an exact measurement. Talk to a sincerely religious woman in your community who can tell you the local norm for sincerely religious women.
