RE: Smoking |

"Eating too much red meat is also unhealthy and would probably also cut years off a persons life, is that assur too?? NO. in moderation it is ok. (ask any pulminologist that removes his emotions from the area and they will tell you 2-3 cigarettes a day will not harm you in anyway).
Halacha is a very intricate system we can not just say I have an emotion against something therefore its assur. You have to be able to prove from a halalchik standpoint how and why its assur. So if you still maintian it is assur please clarify. thanx"
I argue with Moshe who posted the above. Nobody can say that 2-3 cigarettes a day will absolutely not harm you. If anyone says that, they don;t know what they are talking about. It is more unlikely to be a problem, especially when only 10% of smokers get lung cancer? Yes. But to think you can only smoke a certain amount and you will be ok is wrong. All it takes is one mutated cell.... Yes, the cumulative effect of many cigarettes over many years is more important as the chances of mutation rises. But don't rationalize this and think that a certain number of cigarettes per day or week and you're guaranteed to be OK. Also, I would say that eating red meat excessively, not exercising and doing other things that have been shown by medical knowledge to be dangerous for your health are in the same category as smoking. Why is there a difference? They are all risk factors for potentially fatal diseases. If you understand the physiology behind cardiac disease and lung cancer you will see why moderation by meat is ok, but not necessarily by smoking.

Then, of course there is another way of feeling good about smoking. By simply saying, "if I'm going to die, I might as well
have smoked". Yes, I agree, he is addicted already.
