Subject:  Smart Thermostats
Message:  Dear Rabbi Abadi: I very much appreciate your website.

I'm noticing more and more smart thermostats in homes that I visit ( Nest, Honeywell Lyric, Ecobee are some popular ones). They have occupation sensors that will adjust the temperature if they detect someone is around. Some will also change their display when you walk by them. I expect that these will become unavoidable soon enough.

So far as i can tell, they don't have a "sabbath mode" as our ovens do.

What is your position on this? If we are to write the manufacturers, what direction should we give them for a Sabbath mode?

Many thanks,

W

Reply:  Not familiar how it works, but if it changes because you now need the higher/lower temperature, it would be a problem.
However, when walking by, the screen changes, that isn't an issue, as long as you don't need it to change
