Subject:  Upshernish
Message:  Dear Rabbi Abadi,
Firstly I would like to thank you for your wonderful resource. In South Africa, we unfortunately have a situation where people are being encouraged to practice chalav yisroel, grow beards, and eat "mehadrin" meat before keeping basic kashrut, Shabbat and taharat hamishpacha. One very popular custom being encouraged locally is that of the upshernish. What is the halachic basis for doing this and is this normative jewish practice? Thank you so much once again for providing a normal perspective on orthodox judaism!
Reply:  It's a Custom mostly among Chassidic Jews, although they have said that the Ar"i believed in it, too.
My feeling about all this kind of stuff is that if God wanted us to keep his Commandments, he should have made them all Customs, instead.
