Subject:  Radio on Shabbos
Message:  can one leave the radio on shabbos for the news especially after 9-11?Its important to know whats happening for safety purposes.

Reply: Yes, if you live near a place where there is an active danger, ie. hurricane watch, nuclear reactor leak, forest fire, etc. It needs to be a real active threat for where you are, not a possible threat.
I had an elderly aunt, who lived alone, who left a radio on 24 hours a day, every day, so that a burglar might think someone was home. Was this permitted?

Reply:  Absolutely.
The time it is an issue is those guys that leave the Radio on to hear the scores. That is not really Kavod Shabbat.
